Town of Capitol Heights

 

The Incorporated Town of Capitol Heights, a Gorgeous Prince George’s County municipality, is seeking a consultant to assist the Town in adopting a Green Agenda by providing “green” and “sustainability” consulting services. The Town seeks to become an active participant in the green movement and initiatives proposed by President Barack Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency; the State of Maryland’s Smart, Green, and Growing Program; and Prince George’s County’s Green Building Initiative. The Town of Capitol Heights seeks to be a leader among Prince George’s County municipalities and Maryland communities to adopt and support a Green Agenda.

 

The Town of Capitol Heights has received funding from the State of Maryland Department of and the Prince George’s County. These funds will provide the Town with the opportunity to provide grants, technical assistance, and to Capitol Heights homeowners. In addition, the Town seeks LEED Certification as part of its Capital Improvement Plan to upgrade existing municipal properties.

 

The Town of Capitol Heights is 3.4 square miles, with a population of over 4,300 residents, approximately 1,400 homes, and contains tributaries of the Watts Branch, several local parks, and borders the District of Columbia at Southern Avenue. The Town seeks to develop a Green Agenda and Sustainability Initiatives, including but not limited to, preservation of open space, reduction of energy usage for all municipal properties, provide outreach and technical assistance to residents and businesses in the area of energy efficiency and create green jobs for youth and residents.

 

The Green Consultant is expected to provide recommendations and leadership in the following areas:

-          Creating Green Jobs

-          Youth Participation in the Green Movement

-          Green Building Practices

-          Environmental Justice

-          Reduction of Carbon Emissions

-          Creating Community Gardens

-          Researching funding for green projects from governmental and non-governmental sources

-          Researching Federal, Regional, and Local legislation on environmental concerns

-          Other related items to green projects and the green movement

 

The Green Consultant will also be contracted to research and write grants from various sources to fund “green” projects and initiatives within the Town.
